The Ultimate Life of Water is a co-created interactive installation located in Kalundborg, Denmark, as part of Case Study 9. It features a 2×3 meters vinyl foam floor printed with Augmented Reality (AR) image markers, creating a virtual city map with various industries and infrastructure. This installation serves as a ground-breaking exploration into the innovative realm of water management, particularly focusing on a fictional Water Utility called Ultimate Utility. Through cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology, visitors are invited to delve into a captivating journey that unveils the intricate dynamics of sustainability and collaboration within the Ultimate City.

When and where is it?
Located at Kalundborg Forsyning in Denmark, the IMX is available for visitors to explore and engage with during designated hours.
Who can participate?
Participants of all ages are welcome to experience the IMX. Whether you’re a community member, a student, a local business representative, an environmental organization member, or a municipal authority, your input and engagement are valuable.
Why participate?
By participating in the IMX, you’ll gain insights into how industries collaborate to minimize waste and optimize resource utilization through symbiotic relationships. You’ll also contribute to raising awareness about sustainability and fostering collaboration among stakeholders in water management practices.
How can you participate?
- Explore the Industries: Using your smartphone or tablet, scan AugmenteReality (AR) markers strategically placed throughout the exhibition space. Each marker represents a different industry site, such as a chemical plant, food and beverage industry, farming, or refinery.
- Explore Symbiotic Relationships: Dive into the AR visuals to learn how various industries collaborate to minimize waste and optimize resource utilization. Discover how byproducts from one industry become valuable resources for another, creating a closed-loop system that benefits both the economy and the environment.
- Engaging with Stakeholders: Interact with fellow participants from diverse backgrounds and share insights, ideas, and feedback on how to further enhance symbiotic relationships and promote water reuse practices in the region.
- Providing Feedback: After experiencing the AR installation, take a moment to provide feedback on your overall impression and the effectiveness of the exhibition in raising awareness about sustainability and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Your input will help shape future initiatives and improvements.

Ultimate Life of Water Features
Interactive Infographics: Dive into the interconnected relationships between industries in Ultimate City through engaging narratives and interactive games. Tailored for users aged 13 and above, this segment offers an immersive exploration of Ultimate City’s vibrant industries. Participants, whether citizens or visitors, engage with an innovative Immersive Media Experience (IMX) to understand the intricate web of connections within Ultimate City.
The 3D objects that appear after scanning the markers represent various industries such as Chemical, Food and Beverage, Refinery, Farm, Utility, and the Ultimate City itself. Clicking on these objects will reveal their depicted relationship with the ecosystem.
Ecosystem 3D Visualization: Embark on a journey to experience a 3D visualization revealing the impact of water imbalance on the ecosystem and community relationships. At the climax of the experience, users delve into the “Ecosystem 3D Visualization” where the consequences of symbiotic operations within Ultimate City unfold. Witness a breathtaking display showcasing the effects of water imbalance on the ecosystem and its connections within the community.
Ecoystem 3D Visualization. The interactive and animated display initially portrays a classroom with quality facilities. However, the introduction of water scarcity unveils a decline in education facilities as a negative consequence. Adequate water management ensures a stable supply chain, resulting in well-stocked shops. Yet, the visualization also exposes infrastructure deterioration and food supply depletion as consequences, providing a clearer understanding of the importance of water symbiosis.

Escape Room Game: Put your skills to the test in an escape room game designed to promote water reuse and resource optimization through strategic planning and decision-making. Geared towards advanced users familiar with industrial or water symbiosis concepts, the goal of the ‘escape room’ is to reduce total wastewater outflow by 50%, decrease clean water input by 25%, strategically place all new industries, and ensure they meet their demands. As new industries increase water demand, strategic connections with existing ones aim to not only meet increased demand but also reduce overall clean water consumption from the Water Utility.
